50th Anniversary: WindanSea Surf Club

The WindanSea Surf Club is celebrating their 5oth anniversary and commissioned a custom memorial longboard for this special occasion. This beauty is a 9'-6" cruiser modeled after some of Bear Mirandon's work from the 1960's. 16-1/4" x 22" x 12-3/4" loaded with Volan, custom stringers and a Bear inspired glass-on single fin. Thanks Bear! This baby may wind up in the California Surf Museum in Oceanside or may end up in one very lucky surfers hands.

Plotting

Team rider Monica DeLeon plotting a new short board shape with El Guapo. Should be interesting.
She also rips with grace on a long board too!

I Have A Vision

Our friend Erik Baldwin called me up about a week and a half ago and he spoke about a vision and concept he had. It centered on a board design he had been thinking about and was stuck deep in his cerebellum. He has worked with us in the past, ridden some of our shapes, given us valuable feedback and is incredibly knowledgeable about the nuances of surfboard design and the dynamics of water flow. Dude is Renaissance Man mixed with surfing McGyver. Plus he rips and is sponsored by a host of local companies..... so.....no brainer....we said "Come on down!". Here's a few shots of Dennis and Erik working on a collaborative vision. The template was made, blank rough shaped and kinks worked out. Looking forward to seeing the finished board glassed and finned. Stay tuned.

Load Me Up

"Hi. I'm a 6'-10" rounded pin-tail. I've been told that I'm an all around fun guy. I hope to see you in the water sometime soon. My dad (Mr. Murphy) is taking me over to Diamond Glassing so they can give me some finishing touches and counseling on how to float better and appear more polished. Later."

Skip Frye and Dennis Murphy

That's over 80 years of surfboard shaping experience and expertise looking back at you. Two of the best longboard shapers left here in San Diego. Photo was taken recently at the UCSD Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational held at Scripps.

Here's Dennis' contribution to the auction and raffle. Wide balsa and redwood stringer, wood tail block and beautiful glassed on skeg. It fetched a few $K and has made somebody very happy indeed.

Classic art that you can actually ride.

Surf For A Cure

If you want to check out something fun and unique, stop by Scripps in La Jolla on Sunday, August 23rd for the 16th Annual Luau and Longboard Invitational. Loads of green backs are raised for a very good cause, lots of legendary surfers and surfy types on the beach, a team surf contest and a very sweet raffle - with some killer boards shaped by local legendary shapers.... including our own Dennis Murphy. He has one 9 footer in the raffle that has balsa, redwood, sun fin and insane wooden tail block. See below for more info........

Each August, the annual Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational surfs for a cure to raise awareness and much needed funds for cancer research. By bringing together some of the most respected men and women in surfing history with business leaders, scientists, local politicians and national celebrities, the Longboard Luau is one of the world’s most successful surfing fundraiser and has an international reputation for celebrating the “aloha” spirit in the fight against cancer. Now in its 16th year, the Invitational has raised more than $3 million for the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.
